Meaghan Elizabeth, founder of Fashion Savage, is a Toronto-based fashion and lifestyle writer who takes her content beyond outfit posts to report on the fashion industry, its designers, and fashion events happening in Toronto and around the world. While Meaghan isn’t shy of being in front of the camera, most of her content takes the reader behind the scenes of fashion - Meaghan writes insightful editorial pieces where her deep knowledge of fashion history is unmistakable. As far as I’m concerned, Fashion Savage is a critical resource for Canadian fashion, because nearly every time I Google a designer, Meaghan has not only written about them, but her articles are within the top three pages returned in the search results! I’ve been following Meaghan’s blog for years and finally had the chance to meet her earlier this spring when we both attended Yorkdale’s FashionCAN, a two-day runway show featuring collections by Canadian designers. I admire Meaghan’s devotion to Canadian fashion - she is a constant presence at events and trade shows that support Canadian designers. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know Meaghan and I am thrilled to introduce you to her!

Before deciding to pursue a career in the fashion industry, Meaghan was heading towards a career in academics. She completed her undergraduate studies in political science and history at York University and earned a Masters degree in political science from the University of British Columbia. It was while she was at UBC when Meaghan started her fashion blog - whenever she found herself in need of a break from doing research for her Masters, she turned to fashion, a topic she had always been passionate about. By the time she had finished her degree, Meaghan came to the realization that fashion was her true calling, and made the decision to start fresh upon her return to Toronto in 2013. Her first foray into the industry was freelancing as a social media consultant for an online accessories boutique, all the while continuing to create content for Fashion Savage, and by the end of 2014 she turned the blog that she started as an experiment into a full-time business, reporting on events, emerging talent and industry news. Meaghan hasn’t completely left her past behind her though, and hopes to one day return to her roots and blend her academic background with her passion for Canadian fashion by teaching fashion at the college level.

Based on the calibre of designers Meaghan has interviewed, and by the quality content that she produces, I had an inkling that Meaghan is very well-respected in the Canadian fashion community, and this was confirmed by the show of support from the notable designers, models and influencers who attended her first-ever event, Savage Social, which took place last month. In attendance were designers Tara Rivas, Kyriako and Sharida Caras (Stephan Caras), and Michael Zoffranieri (ZOFF); models Paul Mason and Lina Shekhovtsova; and influential Toronto men’s fashion bloggers Alexander Liang and Syed Sohail (The Prep Guy)… and that’s just to name a few! Meaghan has a savviness and sophistication about her that others naturally gravitate towards. She’s fun to be around and is always in good spirits - she said it best when she said “if you have a positive outlook, positive things will come to you.” So true! I admire Meaghan’s dedication to Canadian fashion and it’s clear I’m not the only one. I feel privileged to know Meaghan and look forward to watching her star continue to rise. Want more? Here’s what #WeWantToKnow, from Meaghan herself:

I can't start my morning without...A good browse through Instagram.

I have a weakness for... Chocolate... And just about any other type of sweet.

Most people don't know that I... Have two degrees in Political Science.

Currently reading...I’ve been switching back and forth between Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers.

I want... Everything! ...Kidding (sort of)! World peace. For Toronto and Canadian fashion to make it on the international stage. And a Chanel handbag. That’s not too much to ask for, is it?

Thank you Meaghan, for participating in #WeWantToKnow! See you at Toronto’s next fashion event, if not sooner!
